Confusing words in English

 

  1. Difference in Advice and Advise

Advice is a noun which means SALAAH.

Advise is a verb which means SALAAH DENA.

  • My parents advised me to remain focused.

  • My parents gave me a piece of advice to remain focused.

  • My parents gave me many pieces of advice.

Note: advice is an uncountable noun so neither its singular can be made nor its plural can be made.

There are ways to make its singular or plural. The same concept is applied with the nouns information and work.

  1. Difference between effect and affect

Grammatically effect is a noun which means PRABHAAV and affect is a verb which means PRABHAAV DAALNA.

There is a positive effect of this trick on our way of learning. (Noun)

This trick affected our way of learning positively. (Verb)

Global warning has a great effect on our planet. (Noun)

Global warning has affected our planet greatly. (Verb)

 

  1. Compliment and Complement

The word compliment means to wish someone and complement is something that completes. In fact complement word has been derived from the word complete.

  • I am here to prepare for NDA exam well. (Complement)

  • My mother complimented me, “I am very smart.”

 

  1. Cite, site, sight

Cite (V): To highlight something UBHARNA

He cited the fact in that discussion “the actual reason of stampede.”

Site (N): construction site where work is going on         JAHAN KAAM CHAL RHA HAI

That day my father was at site for some important work.

Sight (N): Vision   DRISHTI

For defence career, you should have 6/6 eye sight.  

 

  1. Elicit and Illicit

Elicit is a verb which means to make someone speak the truth. To draw out a response, answer or fact from someone.

  • Police make criminals elicit the reason of their illicit activities with the help of third degree torture.

 

Illicit is an adjective which means illegal. GAIR KANOONI

  • Cheating is illicit in student’s life.

 

  1. Access, Excess, Axis, Exceed

Access is both a noun as well as a verb.

Access (N): PAHUNCH

Access (V): PAHUNCHNA

I have access to the PM of country.

I can’t access it because I have no access. (V,N)

 

Excess means abundance. Excess is a noun.

  • Excess of anything is bad.

  • Now our vocabulary is in excess and I think I will surely get them in my exam.

 

Exceed is a verb which means ADHIK HONA.

Your passage should not exceed 200 words.

 

Learning confusing words we should have clairvoyance and alacrity.

 

There are three axes. X axis, Y axis and Z axis.   

  1. Ascent, Accent, assent, Ascend

Ascent: to climb

Accent: Way of speaking

Assent: Agreement

Ascend: Increasing order

 

  1. Principle and Principal

Principle means SIDDHANT and principal means the head of school.

 

  1. Coerce and coarse

Coerce is a verb which means to force or to compel. BAL DENA, ZOR DENA

Coarse is adjective which means awkward. BHADDA.

We are coerced to complete our course.

It looks coarse when someone is coerced unreasonably.

  1. Stationery and Stationary  

Stationery is the shop and pen, pencils whereas stationary means static.
