Idioms and Phrases Exercise for Competitive Exams

  1. At sixes and sevens: In disorder

BIKHRI HUI HONA, TITAR BITAR HONA

In my study room, my books are at sixes and sevens when I am close to my exam whereas my books are in apple pie order when there is no pressure in studies.

  1. At the spur of the moment: at the last moment

In order to keep the things in apple pie order, these things are not to be planned at the spur of the moment.  

  1. In the eleventh hour: at the last moment

When we are told some work in the eleventh hour, we are full of woes. Weal and woes are the part of life but doing something in the eleventh hour causes us to rejig many things which are tough for jejune people.

  1. An apple seller keeps his apples in an apple pie order and he starts vituperating those people who play with that synchronization of the arrangement.

  2. At dagger’s drawn : open enmity

Now there is no peace and harmony in their relationship. They are at dagger’s drawn on trifles.

  1. Spill the beans: reveal the secret

  2. To air dirty linen in public : bring all surreptitious things in front of public

  3. Forty winks: a short nap

We get rejuvenated and start doing our work agilely if we get forty winks of 40 minutes in diurnal.  

  1. A paper tiger: a person who looks so threatening but in reality he in ineffective.

Barking dogs seldom bite.

  1. Under the table: making or receiving payments surreptitiously

Turpitude officers receive bribe under the table.

  1. At the drop of a hat: easily done  

  2. Minion : lowly servant

  3. Charlatan: a person who shows off his knowledge than he actually has

  4. Perilous: dangerous  

  5. Vapid: Insipid, tasteless

I can’t sip the insipid things. I can sip only tasty things.

Non smokers can be satisfied with vaping as they find smoking full of vapidity.

 

Power of Imagination

The one who has sense of integrity doesn’t avow the things under the table. He has veracity in his deeds and does his things with valor. Weal and woes are the part of life but who compromises with ethics and values is the turpitude person. He maintains the dignity of his profession in his sleep or forty winks. There may be many challenges by paper tigers but he keeps doing his tasks with vivaciousness. He keeps doing his work with vehemence even if he is at dagger’s drawn or in Scylla and Charybdis. He has complacence with his organization and never spills the beans about his organization. Such a perseverant person has bees in his bonnet to take his task at the transcendent level of success. Such a perspicacious person is prompt in giving his services at the drop of a hat that leads the organization at crescendo level of success. He may have many vital things of life at sixes and sevens but his veracity is not challenged even a single percent. He gets ready with alacrity even at the spur of the moment when he finds things goal oriented.
