Basics of Tenses and Helping Verbs

 

Basics of English Language (Tenses Concept)

Helping verbs help us in showing the time in a sentence. Tense means time and it a natural concept so we must have a good command over helping verbs to master tenses.

Simple Sentences: To show the things. There is no main verb.

Present

Is, am, are

Past

Was, were

Future

Will be, shall be

  • I am in English class.

  • He was in the library.

  • His brother will be in the gym.

Action oriented sentences: main verb is there.

  • Indefinite                here it is not definite whether the work is going on or done.

I take dinner at 8 pm.

Yesterday I called you.

I will give a presentation on AI today.

Present

No H.V. in affirmative sentences.

Singular Subject- V1+ s or es

Do (P), Does (S)- Negative and Interrogative sentences

Past

No H.V. in affirmative sentences.

Did (S & P)- Negative and Interrogative sentences

Future

Will (S), shall (I, we) + V1

 

  • Continuous             work is going on

[ING Form of verb]

Present

Is (S), Am (I), Are (P)

Past

Was (S), Were (P)

Future

Will be (S), shall be (I, we)

He is a doctor and he is practicing at this hospital.

I am a trainer and I am making you practice tenses.

They are my friends and they are preparing for Armed Forces.

He was my batch mate and he was preparing for JEE.

They were confident and they were giving the presentation passionately.

This product will be costly and they will be selling it at a low price.

  • Perfect                     work is done [V3]

Present

Has (s), Have (P)

Past

Had (S & P)

Future

Will have (S), Shall have (P)

 

I had informed everyone.

All the students will have come in the class.

  • Perfect Continuous

[ Done + Going on ]

Present

Has been (S), Have been (P)

Past

Had been (S & P)

Future

Will have been (S), Shall have been (P)

 

MAI BAHUT DER SE YHI SOCH RHA HU.

I have been thinking for a long time.

VAH EK SAAL SE DILLI ME RAH RHA HAI.

He has been living in Delhi for one year.

 

Smartest way to remember these helping verbs.

Action: to walk

  • I walk in the morning.

  • I am walking right now.

  • I have already walked for a long time.

  • I have been walking for many days.

  • Yesterday I walked for 5 kilometers.

  • When I was walking, I experienced many things.

  • I had already walked before you came.

  • I had been walking in the evening for many years.

  • Today I will walk in the evening.

  • This time, he will be walking.

  • He will have walked by this time.

  • He will have been walking for many days.
