Concept of Linking Verbs in English Grammar with Exercise
Linking Verbs: Linking verbs are verbs that connect the subject of a sentence to a subject complement, which is a word or phrase that describes or identifies the subject. These verbs do not show action but rather serve as a link between the subject and additional information about the subject.
Common linking verbs include forms of "to be" (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been) and sensory verbs (look, sound, smell, taste, feel). Other linking verbs include become, seem, appear, grow, turn, prove, and remain.
Examples:
Forms of "to be":
She is a teacher. (is links "she" to "a teacher")
They were happy. (were links "they" to "happy")
Sensory Verbs:
The cake smells delicious. (smells links "cake" to "delicious")
The music sounds great. (sounds links "music" to "great")
